A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of an elderly couple on a farm in Bonnievale.
South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, told TimesLIVE the suspect was arrested on Sunday.
“This morning, Bonnievale detectives arrested the suspect in McGregor, another rural town which is not far from the murder scene. The suspect was found in possession of one of the couple’s missing items,” she said.
The couple, who were in their 70s were discovered on Friday dead in their bed.
An initial tip off alerted police about an abandoned vehicle on a dirt road, leading to the discovery of the couple on their Sandfontein farm.
Further investigations revealed the couple were not shot.
“It is believed the victims were hacked with a sharp object,” said Potelwa.
The suspect is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
Potelwa said further arrests could be made as the investigation continues.
Wikus Steyn, the victim’s brother took to social media to share his grief and revealed the identities of the murdered couple, his eldest brother Piet and his wife Elmien Steyn.
“My heart ache for those who carry so much anger, hate and bitterness. May I also express my forgiveness towards those who insensitively turned their antagonism towards me.”
Wikus shared fond memories about his relationship with Piet.
“He was often like a father to me and I had the highest respect and regard for him.”
Piet and Elmien Steyn will be remembered for their involvement in the community.
“Their love for their children and grandchildren and help in the community was only shadowed by their humble life at his feet.”
“Please allow us to mourn the sad loss of our dear ones and not use this as an opportunity to propagate your agendas. I love South Africa and pray for healing,” Steyn concluded.
