Approximately 90 000 driving incences will be issued during the following three weeks after a strike at the Western Cape Department of Transport caused a backlog. The department was involved in a labour dispute with employees who were contracted to work at the Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) and who are responsible for the issuing of driver’s licences.

Speaking to IOL, Department of Transport spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said that the department is pleased that the finalisation of the dispute will mean affected employees will resume their duties once again.

“In catching up with the July and August 2018 production period, the DLCA is now implementing a contingency plan,” said Mnisi. He also added that since the strike action over 800 000 cards have been printed and over 500 000 cards dispatched.

The Department of Transport’s Head of Communication, Jeandré Bakker, said that drivers who had applied for a driver’s licence before the expiry date on their card would not have to pay for a temporary licence if their three-month grace period had already lapsed.

Applicants can check the status of their cards by sending their ID number to 33214.
