After implementing Stage 2 load shedding just this morning, Eskom has announced that the nationwide rotational electricity cuts are being ramped up to Stage 4, which will take effect from 1pm to 10pm today.

In a social media post, Eskom explained the decision to implement Stage 4 load shedding was to due to pressure on the grid.

The electricity provider said the loss of additional generating units placed increased pressure on the grid, saying “Since this morning we have unexpectedly lost six additional generating units which have put additional strain on the system.”

All electrical points must be treated as “live” during load shedding.

Compared to Stage 2 load shedding, Stage 4 requires double the amount of megawatts, amounting to a total of 4000MW.

“Load shedding is conducted rotationally as a measure of last resort to protect the power system.”

Eskom advises residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during the period indicated.

“Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand,” it says.

Detailed information of the load shedding schedule can be found here.
