Savour and taste the flavours of the fynbos indigenous to the southern tip of Africa at the Company Gardens in Cape Town.

The Cape Town Fynbos Experience, which is managed by the Cape Town Heritage Trust, has created and hosts a unique event for locals and tourists in the heart of the city.

As a protected plant species that thrives in even the harshest conditions, there are 6 000 types of fynbos, each with their own distinctly-South African flavour.

Patrons are hosted in the former garden manager’s home in the one of South Africa’s oldest formal gardens. The Company Gardens is a historic site that was once a vegetable and fruit farm owned by the Dutch East India Company and dates back to 1652.

Eight kinds of fynbos plants will be up for tasting, and visitors can get familiar with their unique aromas and notes in a number of forms, including herbal tea infusions, sweet cordials, aromatic vinaigrettes, and infused oils. An array of sweet treats are also offered, along with edible plants and seasoning salts.

A medicinal garden is located at the garden manager’s home, where indigenous plants used in traditional healing and homeopathic medicine grow.

Those wishing to take home fynbos-filled treats can purchase edible fynbos bouquets at the Fynbos Florist and Heritage Shop.
