‘I believe I can be better than the machine.’
Cape Town-based painter and sculptor Andrzej Urbanski may create works that look like they’ve been computer generated, but no, the careful layering of paint and colour is a hundred percent him.
A Polish native who grew up in Germany but now calls Cape Town home, Urbanski is currently exhibiting MINDGAME, an exhibition of abstract painting and sculpture, at Salon91 until 18 April 2015.
Urbanski left Berlin to create large, shimmering, optically bending spaces made from squares, triangles and hexagons, reminiscent of today’s contemporary built environment. With skill as a graffiti artist, he left the train yards behind for a more traditional form of painting full-time.
Since his 2012 artist residency in South Africa, he has devoted his time to the streets, cultures and social interactions of Cape Town.
The works are a colourful testament to abstract art as a form of engagement with the world, not a withdrawal from it.
