Waves for Change is presenting their first Surfboard Auction on April 6, from 7pm. Hosted at the Live Bait restaurant in Muizenberg, the organisation hopes to change lives one wave at a time. Everyone is invited to come and support the mental and physical wellbeing of South Africa’s youth.
Waves for Chance (W4C) holds NPO and PBO status in South Africa, with it’s focus being on the physical and mental wellbeing of at-risk youth. Avid surfer and founder of the organisation, Tim Conibear, saw daily exposure to violence and stress effecting the children of his community, inspiring him to take action in the best was he knew how – surfing.
In the absence of emotional support, stress often manifests into anti-social and high-risk behaviour, leaving many young South African’s at-risk. Early surfing sessions showed that participants experiences improved feelings of belonging, strength, trust, and confidence – key pillars of wellbeing. This was reflected in behaviors and attitudes, as noticed by parents and teachers.
W4C works in communities affected by violence, poverty and conflict, where mental health services are often stigmatised and under-resourced. Working in partnership with local community members and health professionals, they identify, train, and resource mentors, who work to open programmes that service the youth of their own home communities.
The organisation has developed into an award winning Surf Therapy programme that operates in some of the most at-risk communities in South Africa and Africa. The aim of the event is to raise funds that will contribute towards the continuous impact and success of W4C.
One-of-a-kind surfboards, painted and designed by various local artists, will be auctioned off by MC/auctioneer, Deon Brig. In addition, spot prizes will add to the excitement of the evening while guests enjoy views of the world-class Surfers Corner. Live entertainment and a delicious three-course meal will keep visitors satisfied throughout the evening.
Tickets are available for purchase at R550 per person and includes a welcome drink, three-course dinner prepared by the Live Bait kitchen, table wine, and live entertainment.
