The Western Cape is home to some of the most luxurious estates in the country and property prices tend to be three times the national average, with the number of residents opting for estate living growing each year.

Estate property sales comprise of roughly 5% of all sales and around 15% of the overall property market value according to Lightstone Property, and prices can extend beyond R20 million, but how much exactly does it cost to live in some of the Mother City’s most pricey estates? We give you the breakdown:

1. Silverhurst Estate

This luxurious estate in Silverhurst has a lot to offer, from 24-hour security to rolling lawns, solar power, lush greenery and Dutch-reminiscent architecture, as well as good schools in the area.

Founded in 1685, developers were determined to shape the estate into one of the most prestigious in the country, with limited subdivisions and a single-minded focus on quality.

Prices range from R8 million to R28 million, but a high-end home could set you back even more.

2. De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate

This premium spot in Stellenbosch is perfectly designed for older residents as well as golfing enthusiasts.

The 300-hectare estate is a working farm comprising of 120 hectares of vineyards, citrus orchards and olive groves. Part of the estate is a wetlands area which, together with the many dams on the property, is home to a variety of bird and fish species.

This natural escape and peaceful homestead will set you back roughly R8.3 million to R30 million.

3. Domaine des Anges Estate

Domaine des Anges is an up-market residential community and was one of the first security estates to be established in Franschhoek.

The gardens and clubhouse were built in the year 2000, and the last house was completed in 2009. The French Provençal design theme harks back to the time of the Huguenot settlers who first inhabited the Franschhoek valley. The 12-hectare estate is bounded on the east by agricultural land and enjoys 360-degree panoramic views of the mountains.

A home in this luxurious mountainous estate will cost you between R7 million and R17 million, but some homes are on the market for around R20 million.

4. Winelands Estate

With easy access to some of the Winelands’ most sought-after wine estates, this living option is perfect for adventurous couples and wine-lovers.

The estate is also perfectly located for nearby exciting activities such as horse riding and mountain biking.

Offering 24-hour security in the Drakenstein Valley of the Cape Winelands, Winelands Estate consists of 35 freehold stands sized between 4 000 sqm and 1.1 hectares.

Expect to fork out between R9 million and R20 million for a home here.

5. Silvertree Estate

The Silvertree Estate in picturesque Tokai is one of the most coveted residential estates in Cape Town.

Launched in 2000, this established yet intimate estate provides home-owners with the safety of a gated community and the convenience of its proximity to Reddam House School.

The estate is also conveniently located less than 30 minutes from the Cape Town CBD and 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport.

Its convenient location and beautiful design put prices between R7 million and R13 million on average.
