The second annual Cellarbake@Nitida took place last Sunday at the Durbanville wine estate and was a roaring success. Cellarbake’s premise is to pair sweet and savoury treats with Nitida’s enticing range of wines and we were blessed with exceptional weather on the day for the event.
The biggest winner of the day was Arugula Bistro, aggregating a sizeable queue of hungry patrons waiting in anticipation for a grilled pork belly ciabatta topped with pickled jalapeño jam that was paired with a sampling of Nitida Pinot Noir. The wait was certainly worth it.
Another delectable pairing was The Larder’s famous chicken sausage roll with the renowned Nitida Sauvignon Blanc. Adding zest to the mix was Foodbarn’s Granadilla and Lime Cupcakes with White Chocolate paired with newly released 2014 Matriarch MCC in White, as well as Nitida’s Wild Child – paired perfectly with a carrot cupcake from Whimsical Cupcakes.
Society of the Blind provided summer-bright picnic baskets for guests to fill with freshly baked hand-made breads by Eureka Mills and a selection of savoury accompaniments from Richard Bosman’s charcuterie offering and Mediterranean Delicacies tapas, cheeses and dips (which I’m a huge sucker for).
We really enjoyed the family-friendly picnic theme of Cellarbake. A kids’ play area made it a breeze for adults who wanted to enjoy the pairing with peace of mind for the kids to be in a safe environment.
The culmination of bake and grape, good weather and a perfect picnic setting proved a second year of success for Cellarbake@Nitida, with a full year of recovery ahead before the next sweet celebration.
