Cape Town’s very own Lloyd Harris will face off against one of the tennis world’s most challenging opponents in his Wimbledon debut today, and the Mother City is holding thumbs.

At just 22 years old, Harris will stand on the court opposite tennis legend Roger Federer and put his racket to good use in an effort to challenge the tennis giant.

Although Harris is still young, his professional career spans back to 2015 and he has proven his abilities, achieving a career high ATP singles ranking of 87. He has taken home 3 ATP Challenger singles titles and 2 Challenger doubles titles, as well as 13 ITF singles titles and 4 ITF doubles titles.

His accolades are not to be scoffed at; Harris ranks as the second-best tennis player in South Africa, and will be stepping into the ring with the third-best ranked tennis player in the world.

Ahead of the match, which takes place at 3.15pm South African time today in the Centre Court, Harris spoke to the Kfm mornings team about his excitement and nerves.

“It’s a big moment for me, I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty excited. I’m probably playing the greatest player of all time so I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Harris.

When Harris was asked which was the biggest deal for him, his Wimbledon debut or the chance to play Roger Federer, his answer was right on the money.

“To be honest it’s kind of the combination, to have it happen at the same time, that for me is surreal almost. He was my idol growing up and both together are like a fairytale for me,” he said.

Locals are encouraged to tune in and support our local golden boy as he takes on this huge step in his career and plays against his hero.
