To some it was a sinister symbol of colonialism that needed to fall in order for transition to happen, and for some it was a solid part of our country’s heritage. Either way you look at it, the hotly contested Cecil John Rhodes statue at UCT ‘fell’ yesterday.
The tension was palpable as the crowd swelled around the statue before the 5 pm time of removal. Struggle songs were being sung and even an unfortunate bit of hate speech was audible from the crowd as the deadline loomed. But the time eventually came and went, with no indication as to why proceedings were running late.
A jubilant, pop-up crowd suddenly emerged from the field below, storming the fence and settling near the statue.
Eventually it happened. Watch the video below that we shot for full effect.
Disgusting…
Roscoe Hill …
Modern day Golden Calf
A lot of the so called “students” I see in the video appear to be way to old to be first, second, third, forth or even fifth year students, I wonder how many are paid agitators….?
Yea words for this Cassidy Enslin
About time it was removed
About time it was removed
I hope the Rhodes scholarships are also going to fall………
Aaaai Ya Ya simple goed
How sad to watch “THIS BUNCH”defacing the very institution that is supposedly educating them “JOKE!!” They don’t have the intelligence of a dead ANT! How embarrassing for myself and the rest of my fellow South Africans to witness this, and to know that the rest of the world is watching!!!! If these so called STUDENTS are the future of our beautiful country then “GOD HELP US ALL”
Sickening!
The amount of money used to hire that crane would have fed so many people and animals. Sigh
Lord help these lost students.
