The prestigious travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler has ranked Cape Town the third best food city in the world, as voted by consumers in its annual Reader’s Choice Awards.

Taking first place was San Sebastián in Spain, a Basque city famed for its Michelin-starred restaurants and tapas bars, while finishing in second place was romantic capital of the world, Paris.

Cape Town’s foodie scene is huge and we’re home to world-famous restaurants such as The Test Kitchen, so third place is a solid achievement for our city.

But I wonder how deserving we are of this title when poverty and hunger are such common problems in our country? I’m all for the award, however I feel that in a nation where so many go to bed hungry every night, it may be slightly selfish that we’re getting ranked as the third best food city in the world. Just my two cents.

We have a multitude of exciting restaurants and unique dining concepts spanning the city and surrounds, definitely getting us on the international foodie map in recent times. The Reader’s Choice Awards ranked us ahead of cities like Tokyo, Sydney, Budapest, Vienna, Rome and Montreal.

Maria Shollenbarger, writer for Conde Nast Traveler, had this to say about the Mother City:

‘In Cape Town, ‘local’ rules. The Mother city is smallish, casual but supremely stylish, and welcoming – words that describe its artisanal foods and restaurant scenes as much as its citizens.’

Nice one Cape Town! Read the feature here.

Hiya … thing is, to improve the living conditions of poor people who don’t have enough to eat; you need to attract tourism and investment and stimulate the local economy and jobs…….so, in fact, by winning this award, one is getting closer to a goal. Just my two cents.
