Local neighbourhood watch groups could soon have an extra crime-fighting measure up their sleeve as the City considers providing them with night vision goggles to better spot criminals lurking in the shadows. The idea to employ these alternative measures was first raised at the neighbourhood watch feedback presentation in Table View on Monday, August 26.
Ward councillors mentioned the idea with reference to programs being run in certain suburbs and how the extra measures could assist.
“Ward allocations have been made available for this. However, we are still researching the technology and at this time it is under consideration. None of the NHWs have been issued with the mentioned equipment,” Richard Bosman, Executive Director for Safety and Security said in a statement.
Many residents in areas across the Cape dedicate their time towards attending weekly and often daily neighbourhood watch duties to ensure their community is safe. Having night vision goggles at their disposal could assist members of the community to better ensure security without exposing themselves by using bright flashlights.
On Tuesday, August 27, ward councillor Joy McCarthy told News24 that she had allocated R100 000 of her budget towards getting two pairs of night vision goggles to be used to prevent crime.
