When I first heard the words ‘pancake and wine pairing’ in 2014, I thought I’d died and gone to foodie heaven.
There seems to be a competition lately among wine estates to see who can come up with the most unusual pairings. Cheese and chocolate are just so 20th-century – in the past year or two I’ve enjoyed wine and biltong, wine and ice cream, wine and cupcakes, and wine and nougat.
But pancakes … well, pancakes speak to me.
If they speak to you too, you’ll want to get yourself to Uitkyk this winter (I certainly am planning a repeat performance). Just consider the likes of a Uitkyk Chenin paired with a Thai green curry pancake, or the estate’s flagship Carlonet with dark-chocolate heaven.
It doesn’t hurt that the Uitkyk Manor House in which the pairing takes place is impossibly pretty. It’s one of only three double-storey, flat-roofed, 18th-century town houses remaining in the Cape, and has been lovingly restored to its former glory.
Please note, there are only eight pancake and wine pairing events taking place, and booking is essential. See below for details.
