It’s holiday time! A time for laughter, fun and taking the time to enjoy the big outdoors, spend and make time with each other and our children – and often a few of their friends too.

The Cape Winelands have so many options available for all ages.

If you have young children, choose shorter hikes and the places where animals can be patted while the picnic or lunch is being eaten. The Witzenberg has a few lovely short hikes, in Tulbagh you can hike to the Waterfall, have a lunch at kid friendly Duikersdrift and close off your day with a visit to Fynbos Animal Rescue farm. For older kids and grown-ups, the Ceres Zip slide will offer memories forever.

Birds Paradise.

Visit the Drakenstein area, take a drive through Paarl, Wellington and into Bain’s Kloof, which offer the Limietberg Nature Reserve in the Du Toit’s Kloof Mountains offers incredible views, indigenous flora and fauna, crystal clear rock pools, campsites and hiking trails. For the more adventurous Paarl Adventure Trails has something for everyone.

For those who want to drive a little further, a visit to Robertson, McGregor and Montagu offers a few fantastic affordable overnight options, that won’t break the bank.  And we all know that after a bit of a day, even the teens like to sit outside at the fire and roast some marshmallows.  Ride a bike, visit Birds Paradise or stay at the well equipped Guano Caves camp site – some say one of the best kept secrets in the Langeberg. The eatery, @fourcousins offers tasting for all ages, non-alcoholic included. Drive out of Robertson and around to McGregor, rent a bike from the tourism office and do a historical trip through this heritage village.

There are a number of things to do in every town that are free or very economical. Visit the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s web page, www.capewinelands.gov.za  to find the individual tourism office’s web address. Or even easier, download the Cape Winelands Routes and Events App for free.  Search for it in your Google Play store or I-store.
