While the Northern Cape struggles to survive one of the worst droughts experienced in years, innocent sheep are dying by the dozens as their owners can’t feed them or give them water. When 79-year-old Magriet Serdyn heard about their hardship, she rose to the occasion and decided to do all she could to offer aid.
Serdyn started contributing to a page called “Save the Sheep” that is dedicated to drought relief for farmers in Sutherland. The page keeps followers up-to-date on the happenings in Sutherland and asks that those who care about the initiative purchase a crocheted sheep character or other sheep merchandise. The funds for all products sold go towards aiding farmers to better care for their sheep.
Most locals heard about Serdyn when her daughter Chelna Marais shared a post about her mother on the popular Facebook group, #ImStaying.
“At nearly 80 my mom crochet sheep to sell for Save the Sheep drought relief in the Northern Cape, even when they themselves are suffering from the effects of the drought here in the Western Cape. It makes me proud to be part of her ancestry. Just for her and my Dad, I will stay,” Marais said in her post.
This sweet lady has inspired locals across the nation just like she inspired her daughter and many are falling in love with her cute crocheted creations.
Her little handmade sheep have become like mascots for the cause and Serdyn has certainly done all she can to help those in need.
You can support the cause on their Facebook page and look out for their stall at local events to do your part in supporting the farmers of Sutherland and their herds.
