Avocados are what makes health-conscious Cape Town go round – at least when they are available. Those who are avid eaters of the fruit are always shocked at the price at which they retail, and it’s only expected to rise as an avocado shortage has just been announced.

There is a shortage of avocados as they are not yet in season, and their season runs between late February and October. In some areas of South Africa, avocados are harvested between November and January.

Social media users across the country have been complaining about the high price of the beloved green fruit, and have also been complaining about its scarcity.

“We are working hard to resolve this, and apologise for the temporary inconvenience,” Woolworths said on its website.

A look at prices at some of SA’s favourite stores means that a two-pack of avocados will cost an average of R50 or more.

South Africa isn’t the only country struggling with an avocado shortage. Residents in Mexico, the United States of America, New Zealand and Australia have all been complaining about not being able to get their hands on this golden green fruit.

However, as of end February locals could experience a more readily available supply of avocados but only time will tell, the shortage could indeed continue on into the season.
