For the love birds who hoped to enjoy some time in the picturesque Kirstenbosch Botantical Gardens this Valentine’s Day, you’re in luck. The garden will remain open for an extra hour this Friday, February 14.

Gates usually close at 7pm during the summer season, but will remain open until 8pm on Valentine’s Day to allow for visitors who want to enjoy the beautiful backdrop but still have to make their way there from work.

Since this is a popular location for a romantic picnic, extended Valentine’s Day hours will make the planning of this special evening much easier – especially for those last minute planners. There’ll also be no rush to arrive at the garden, since there is some extra time to spend there in the evening.

With its Fynbos Garden, Forest Braille Trail, Fragrance Garden, Useful Plants Garden and Conservatory – which is a desert house with a baobab tree in the centre surrounded by succulents from the Namib desert –  there is a lot to see in the garden. The famous Tree Canopy Walk (fondly known as The Boomslang) is also a must-do on your romantic evening. You’ll need the added time.

If you don’t have time to cater for your picnic in the garden, there are food options for this Valentine’s Day too. There is a pre-order picnic available from Moyo at Gate 1. With vegetarian and gluten-free options, there is something for everyone. The picnic’s are available from R220 and you are required to pre-order by Wednesday, February 12 to collect on Friday. Call 021 762 9585  to order. If you’d prefer a seated dinner, book a seat for Moyo’s Valentine’s Buffet Dinner which includes a welcome drink and entertainment at R265 per person (email [email protected] or call 021 762 9585 to book).

The Kirstenbosch Tea Room at Gate 2 is also offering a pre-order gourmet picnic. Order at least 24 hours in advance online. A vegetarian picnic option is also available and packed in an environmentally friendly bag at R250. Email [email protected] or call 021 797 4883.
