A scared little dog was found bundled in with the trash yesterday and dumped on an abandoned veld on Imperial Road in Mitchell’s Plain. Fortunately, a passerby heard her cries for help and opened the trash bag, effectively saving her life.
“Ricardo Daniel reported the incident to a crime group on WhatsApp and he was given the SPCA’s number to call. After getting in touch with our control room, he waited at Lulu’s side until our vehicle reached her. He is proof that not all hero’s wear capes,” the Cape Of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA said in a statement.
Lulu is an adult small breed mutt and was admitted to the SPCA’s animal hospital last night. “She is currently being treated for an infection – the likely result of the fact that her matted coat is infested with ticks and fleas. We couldn’t be more grateful to Ricardo for showing Lulu the first of many acts of kindness that will now be commonplace in her life. We can only hope that Lulu’s spirit will heal along with her body and that we will be able to see her living in a home with a family who recognises that pets are valuable, irreplaceable and a privilege to share our lives with,” the animal hospital said.
The SPCA is now calling on anyone with information on the identity of Lulu’s owners to come forward.
“We also want to hold someone accountable for this unnecessary act of cruelty and we are calling on the public to please assist us with any information,” the animal organisation said. “Abandonment is a crime in terms of the Animals Protection Act No. 71 of 1962 and those found guilty of contraventions of The Act could face a fine of R40 000 and or a prison term of twelve months. The SPCA accepts unwanted animals with open arms, we never turn any animal away.”
The CoGH SPCA can be called on 021 700 4158/9 during office hours or on 083 326 1604 after hours should you have any information that can assist with this investigation or to report cruelty in general.
“To every single person who reports cruelty and chooses to not look away, we send you our heartfelt thanks, you are our eyes and our ears and we so appreciate you for standing with us in the fight against animal cruelty,” the SPCA added.
Lulu’s veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, shelter and care and the pursuit for justice for her will not come cheap – in fact, it will cost in the region of R20 000 but she is priceless, valuable and most definitely worthy of it.
