Muizenberg’s beachgoers got a fright this morning [Friday, March 13] when a member of the public alerted visitors of a shark spotted in the water.

The shark was seen at the popular Surfer’s Corner, and a member of the public raised the alarm at 9.30am. It is not yet known what species of shark was in the water, or whether it was accompanied by any other apex predators. The incident was logged by Cape Town’s official Shark Spotters.

Shark Spotters can be found on eight beaches across Cape Town, and focus primarily on the False Bay region. This area experiences high levels of shark activity. There are four main beaches with Shark Spotters present at all times throughout the year. These are Muizenberg, St James/Kalk Bay, Kogel Bay and Fish Hoek.

Another four beaches have Shark Spotters too but only during spring. These are Clovelly, Glencairn, Monwabisi and Noordhoek.

The high-priority beaches have been selected on a spatial overlap basis, as the ratio is determined by how popular a beach is versus how many shark sightings there are.
