British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tested positive for the coronavirus. The politician is self-isolating in Downing Street but continues to work from home.
Johnson made the announcement in a video today [March 27], explaining that he has developed mild symptoms. According to a statement from Downing Street, he was advised to get tested by England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chriss Whitty.
“The test was carried out in No 10 by NHS staff and the result of the test was positive,” reads the statement. “In keeping with the guidance, the Prime Minister is self-isolating in Downing Street.”
“Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus,” the Prime Minister wrote in a tweet. “I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video conference as we fight this virus. Together we will beat this. #StayHomeSaveLives”
