In a public engagement with COVID-19 experts, Health Minister Dr. Zwelini Mkhize announced that the country now has 2 272 confirmed coronavirus cases. This is an increase of 99 cases.

There have also been two new COVID-19-related deaths, bringing South Africa’s death toll to 27. These include one 68-year-old male from the Western Cape who had underlying illnesses including diabetes, hypertension and chronic renal disease.

A 57-year-old male from Gauteng also passed away in intensive care this weekend. Mkhize explains that this death is concerning as the patient did not have a record of underlying diseases, which has been the pattern thus far.

A total of 83 663 tests have been completed countrywide thus far, 21 290 of which come from the public sector.
