A customer allegedly stabbed two shopkeepers in Kalbaskraal, Malmesbury for refusing to sell him cigarettes, murdering one of the victims in the process. He has now been arrested and faces charges of both murder and attempted murder.

The attack allegedly occurred on Wednesday, April 15 at about 7.30pm at the Kalbaskraal Superette.

According to News24, the shopkeepers had closed their shop at about 6pm but opened after a person identified themselves as someone they knew.

“The visitor asked the shopkeepers if he could buy cigarettes. They said no and an argument ensued,” said National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.

“The suspect then stabbed the two shopkeepers with a knife, both … once in the neck. The two victims went outside by opening the front door of the shop to look for help.”

The police and ambulance arrived on the scene after residents called for help. One of the shopkeepers, a 27-year-old man, died on the scene. The second victim is now being treated in hospital for a knife wound to the neck.

The attacker fled the scene but police found and arrested him after they received a tip regarding his whereabouts. Naidoo explained that the man was arrested this morning, April 16, at about 4am in Belhar, 70km from the scene of the crime.
