Yesterday, April 25, another liquor store in Cape Town was robbed and then set alight.

Firefighters responded to the break-in at the Diamond Liquor Shop in Halt Road, Elsiesrivier and put out the fire before it spread.

According to Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, the only things burning were crates inside the shop.

“Upon gaining entry to the premises, the suspects went for the storeroom which was empty as alcohol had been moved. They set the crates and bottles on fire thereby damaging the ceiling to the property,” said Brigadier Novela Potelwa in a statement.

According to the South African Police Service, no arrests have been made and the investigation is still underway.

This is not the first incident of looting in Cape Town, or even in Halt Road in this area. Only a few days ago, around R3000 worth in products were stolen from the supermarket in the same road.

Liquor stores have been a significant site of looting and robberies following the liquor ban instated at the beginning of lockdown.
