Following the announcement made by the Department of Education that schools will be reopening on May 4 for teachers, and May 6 for students, The National Teachers’ Union (NATU) announced that its members will not be returning to schools once they have reopened.
This announcement was made by NATU as concerns were raised regarding the health and well-being of the teachers and students in the case of premature opening of educational facilities.
NATU President Allan Thompson says the reopening of schools should not be placed ahead of teachers and pupils health.
Thomson also confirmed that NATU have requested a meeting with basic education minister Angie Motsheka to discuss the guaranteed safety of teachers and students once they return to school.

As of May 6, students will slowly begin returning to schools, starting with grades 12 and seven. On May 20, grades 11 and six will return, followed by grades 10 and five on June 3. As of June 17, grades nine and four will return, followed by grades eight and three on July 1 and lastly grades two and one on July 8, and grade R on July 15.
