South Africans never disappoint with their humour, even in tough times. Serious words spoken by Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has inspired a hit song that has spread through the nation, and even reached the Apple Music Charts.
‘Zol’, a tongue-in-cheek song by musician Max Hurrell, is currently sitting at #8 on the South African Apple Music Charts. The song, released in early May, remixes Dlamini-Zuma’s now iconic line, “When people zol, they put saliva on the paper”. She said this during a media briefing to explained why cigarettes were not allowed to be sold during the nationwide lockdown.
If you haven’t already, take a listen to the song here:
The song is in good company on the charts, sitting alongside international hits like Drake’s ‘Toosie Slide’ and ‘Stuck with U’ by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. ‘Zol’ is currently one of two South African songs in the top 10, joining ‘You’re The One’ by RnB musician Elaine.
Dlamini-Zuma has since responded to the song via Twitter.
Who is this Max Hurrel fellow? We just need to talk.
