Many a fond memory has been shared on the corner of Bree Street and Bloem while enjoying a fresh Jason Bakery pastry or a hot cappuccino. The opportunity to make memories at this much-loved bakery in Bree Street has come to an end. Fear not though, their Green Point store remains open for business.
The popular spot in the heart of the city leaves behind a 13-year legacy – and is owned by siblings, Jason and Brigitte Lilley. They are most famous for their doughssanants, which are freshly baked and feature a new exciting flavour each week.
On their website they say: “We are a Brother and Sister owned and operated Artisan Bakery situated in Cape Town South Africa. Our doors first opened as a ‘hole in the wall’ in 2007 in Bree street and we expanded into the space we have now in 2011. Most people have absolutely no idea what goes into making a loaf of Sourdough, or a bagel or the “humble” croissant. Humble nothing. When it comes to true craftsmanship, a croissant is anything but… That little mofo actually takes three days to make. It doesn’t have to take three days but what sets Jason Bakery apart is an unwavering commitment to an authentic production process.”
They announced the closure of their Bree Street shop in a post on Instagram: “Goodbye old girl. It is with a heavy heart that we bring you this news. We have closed our Bree Street store, the OG, for good. She has been an amazing store with amazing memories. So many good friendships have been made over the years. We have had a lot of fun events. You must remember Pizza and Beats, tapas nights, urban picnics, Lobster Roll Fridays, Burger Fridays and the Big Pig Rig. Thank you to everyone for the loyal support over the years. The show will go on.”
Coronavirus and lockdown has led to many small, local stores closing their doors for good. President Cyril Ramaphosa has predicted that many more small businesses will close in the coming weeks.
For now, we can only remember the memories that brought us happiness at these various establishments and hope that the future will offer a new start for so many who have lost their businesses along the way.
