A woman from Ottery has identified over 100 families in her area who require support during lockdown. To provide help during this tough time, she has started a crowdfunding campaign.

Following social distancing rules are hard in Ottery, as a small flat or house can be occupied by up to 12 people. The suburb is home to over 6 000 people, and many in the area have also been affected by a loss of income as a result of the lockdown.

“The lockdown has also affected the workforce tremendously, as many individuals are unable to work to provide food and other amenities for the people in their care,” says Lauren Juries, a domestic worker who hopes to make a difference in Ottery.

Juries has launched a campaign with donation-based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy, and has partnered with YeboFresh, Omega Family Fellowship, PowerTime, Hands of Honour and Shoprite to make a meaningful contribution to her community.

Known as “Lolla” by her friends, Juries is broadening her efforts to do more for her community. Aware that lockdown hunger is driving people to desperation, she’s recruited her family and friends to provide warm meals to hungry families.

“We are urgently needing funds to buy food to make meals for those who cannot afford to feed themselves,” she says.

The public is encouraged to either donate a YeboFresh package that contains ingredients that allows Juries to continue to make food for those who need it, or make a Backabuddy donation by clicking here. Just R250 will provide ingredients to feed a family of four for a week.

The campaign went live on April 17, and has thus far raised a total of R69 516.56 to purchase basic groceries, fruit and vegetables, meat and electricity for vulnerable families in Ottery.
