If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that truth is stranger than fiction. America’s biggest celebration is July 4, when the nation commemorates their Independence Day. Yesterday’s fireworks ended with an even bigger bang when rapper Kanye West announced on Twitter he will be running for president in 2020.

West has been an unlikely ally to President Donald Trump over recent years, and angered many including his wife Kim Kardashian West.

His announcement – “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future” – triggered a social media storm, with many fans saying they will definitely vote for him.

And others questioning his mental health.

South-African born Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SPACEX, tweeted in reply: “You have my full support!”

This is not the first time West has said he wants to be president of the United States, in 2015 he announced he will be running for top position at the MTV VMA’s.

There are only four months left before polling day on November 3 and the deadline to register independent candidates has not yet passed. If West had to run, it is absolutely possible to do so now.

President Trump has been highly criticised in his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as his indifference to the Black Lives Matter movement, to which West has been vocal on.

One tweet summed up how many are feeling.
