We found this Cape Town favourite on our sister publication Wedding Album, and couldn’t not share…
If you’re heading to the Western Cape Winelands for your wedding (and who wouldn’t, with so many gorgeous venues to choose from), chances are you’ll want to linger for a day or two after you’ve said ‘I do’. Whether it’s an official minimoon or just a short stopover before you jet off on your honeymoon, we know just the place to go…
Steenberg is one of the best known estates in the Constantia Winelands, thanks to its ticks-all-the-boxes offering. A gorgeous wine tasting room (with excellent MCCs to celebrate with) opens on to the popular cellar-door restaurant Bistro Sixteen82, great for brunch, tapas or a more hearty winter’s lunch. A golf estate adjoins the rolling vineyards, and between the two you’ll find the Steenberg Hotel, Catharina’s restaurant and the Gingko Spa.
Twenty-four hours at the hotel, and you may want to replan that honeymoon. Luxury is the watchword here, from the standard rooms through to the suites, with accommodation to suit a variety of tastes and budgets.
Wedding Album was lucky enough to overnight in a gorgeous Manor House suite. If a restored Cape Dutch building with high ceilings, plenty of polished wood and a wonderful confluence of antique finishes and modern convenience sounds like your cup of tea, then this is as good as it gets. Cosy and comfortable, the plush suit has everything you need for a few days of romance, from the cloud-like king-sized to a freestanding bath just begging for bubbles and bubbly.
There’s nothing romantic about a rumbling tummy though, so it’s lucky that Catharina’s is just a stone’s throw away. Light, bright and airy with contemporary accents such as floating origami swans, it’s quite a departure from the style of the Manor House, but the change is refreshing rather than a shock to the system.
Snag a table beside the roaring fireplace and sit back to enjoy polished service, five-star cuisine and wine to match. You can choose from the a la carte menu, but we’d recommend the new winter set menu, which offers three wonderful courses paired with wine. It’s the perfect excuse to while away a good few hours eating and drinking, just the two of you – at last.
