The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Simon’s Town are trying to locate a surfer who was washed out to sea on Wednesday [August 19] due to rough sea conditions in the False Bay area.

NSRI Spokesman, Craig Lambinon, has made an urgent plea to steer clear of the water due to rip currents and rough seas.

“NSRI are appealing to surfers, paddlers and bathers in the False Bay Area of Cape Town, particularly in the Muizenberg area of Surfer’s corner, where rough seas conditions brought on by the recent cold fronts are causing very strong rip currents to prevail,” he said.

According to Lambinon, there were many similar incidents at surfer’s corner on Wednesday, and some have been swept far out to sea.

“NSRI Simon’s Town are currently monitoring a surfer who has been swept at least a kilometre out to sea. A rescue craft is en route to investigate if he needs assistance. But we are asking the public to be cautious in the False Bay area, particularly from approximately Macassar to Simon’s Town, where rough sea conditions are prevailing and strong rip currents are being experienced.”
