Cell C announced that it expects to shut down a total of 128 stores across the country.

According to Reuters, the closure of stores comes as part of the mobile operators plan to cut costs and restructure its operations. If the shut down goes ahead, 546 jobs will be put on the line.

“The retail environment has changed and this has been fast-tracked by the impact of Covid-19 and the evolving purchasing habits of consumers. Much like banks are moving away from brick and mortar branches, Cell C is embracing digital solutions and driving digital inclusion by leveraging collaborations and partnerships,” said Cell C in a statement.

In June, Cell C had also announced that it plans to lay off a total of 960 workers, with the first of the lay offs starting on 30 July. Cell C did however make a voluntary severance package offer to those who were let go.

Cell C currently has a total of workforce of around 2,500 employees situated across 240 stores.
