The City of Cape Town earlier shared information regarding a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that shook some areas of the Cape earlier on Saturday evening.  The tremor is alleged to have originated some 1600km south west of South Africa, at a depth of ten kilometres. At the moment there are no casualties, and no damage has been reported. The National Centre for Seismology has confirmed the earthquake.

The City issued a statement: “The City notes the reports of an offshore seismic event that was felt in a number of suburbs earlier this evening. Reports have come from numerous suburbs of a tremor that was experienced.

“The Disaster Risk Management Centre is not in a position to provide comment on the apparent seismic event until it has been confirmed by the South African Council for Geoscience.

“We can however confirm at this stage that the tremor did not appear to cause any impact on infrastructure of public safety. The City urges the public to report any potential impacts to our Public Emergency Communication Centre by dialing 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.”

Social media reports suggest tremors were experienced in Parow, Milnerton and the Table View area.

No tsunami warning has been issued.
