The Western Cape government is taking precautionary measures in the event of a second wave of COVID-19.

In light of the second waves of coronavirus infections being experienced across the world, Western Cape head of Health, Dr Keith Cloete, said that experts from the province and country are assessing other nations that are currently facing a resurgence in coronavirus infections.

Premier Alan Winde held a digital press conference on Thursday, October 1 with his MECs and Dr Cloete, where they discussed their preparations for the province.

“What they’ve done, they’ve analysed all the factors that underlie the drivers of second waves from the international experience,” said Cloete. “We would rather want to be overcautious than to be overconfident that it won’t happen, so we are erring on the side of caution.”

He continued: “Therefore our strategy that we currently embrace is to make sure that any sign of small outbreaks of COVID-19 need to be recognised early, contained early so that we can contain it as it happens.”

South Africa has officially moved to Alert Level 1 of the National State of Disaster and more restrictions have been eased. To date, South Africa’s recovery rate is at 90% and the curve has flattened in the Western Cape.
