A three-year-old boy drowned in a pool in Camps Bay on Sunday morning, October 4. A death inquest has been opened for further investigation.
Paramedics were contacted and arrived at the Camps Bay home at about 11.50am, reports EWN. A woman, believed to be a doctor and relative, was in the process of performing CPR on the child upon their arrival.
“Paramedics immediately assisted and made every effort possible and continued with CPR. Sadly, there was nothing more that could be done for the little one and he was declared dead on the scene,” said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.
The events surrounding the accident are yet unclear.
As Summer approaches, it is important for parents to be extra wary of drownings. The World Health Organisation suggests interventions that will protect children from drowning:
– Installing barriers that control access to water
– Providing safe places away from water for pre-school children, with capable child care
– Teaching school-age children water safety and swimming skills and train bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation.
“Children can drown in only a few centimetres of water. Please make sure that your home is water safe,” the NSRI cautions.
