The Elangeni Green Zone, which is Durban’s first city farm, has partnered with Boxer Superstores to deliver its wonderfully fresh produce to local consumers. The supermarket is a subsidiary of Pick n Pay.
The green zone was started when a group of homeless prospective farmers made the decision to make the land more arable for farming during lockdown.
“Boxer Superstores decided to step in and offer support for these incredible men and ensuring that their spinach, tomatoes and peppers will not only find their way onto Boxer shelves and the plates of families in Durban, but will also generate continuous income for all the men on the farm,” the superstore said via Facebook.
It will also be donating garden supplies, including seedlings, gumboots, and drums to the Green Zone’s farmers. The farmers make use of only water and cow dung to grow their produce, and sell them to the public at affordable prices.
They plan on building a greenhouse to grow herbs by December, and are in need of gardening implements to help them do so. These include:
– Hammers
– Hacksaw for cutting poles
– A tape measure 5m
– Poles measuring 4 m each
– U nails 6 and 4 inch
