A burger that is swiftly climbing the ranks to the hallowed shortlist of best burger spots in Cape Town is at The Taproom at Devil’s Peak Brewing Company.
It’s not uncommon to find a burger joint in the city that doesn’t serve craft beer, but at very few of these joints, if any, would you be able to savour a beer brewed literally just metres away from where you sit, as you tuck into the famed Tap Room cheeseburger. Although not strictly a burger joint and probably more of a gastropub, this Salt River brewery and eatery also offers a great breakfast and lunch/dinner menu, but the cheeseburger is a standout performer for me.
Taproom’s cheeseburger comes in two sizes, a fair 150g option for lunches and light meals, followed by a 300g hunger-busting option for the full Taproom burger experience. Despite not being a flashy-looking burger as is the case at other specialty burger joints, this burger delivers. But this place is not just about the burgers, they also do a wicked Philly cheese steak roll, chicken and waffles, and beer-battered fish and chips – to name a few of my other favourites. Check out how extensive their menu is here and also the Tuesday burger and fries with a beer for R55 special here.
An airy feel inside the Taproom is owed to the open-plan and spacious seating arrangement, with plenty of standing room included. I have visited for both Friday night dinner and during the week for after-work drinks and it does get compact – a hit for groups of friends with its lively, upbeat atmosphere.
Plus, there’s really great beer!
