Parkscape has issued a baboon advisory urging Tokai-based dog owners to be careful and ensure their pet is leashed, as baboons are commonly found foraging in parts of Tokai.
The advisory came after a number of baboons were crossing Orpen Road into Lower Tokai as well as moving into the forest and residential areas on Saturday, January 30. While it was an alert for that particular time, it is still relevant to keep in mind.
“Please ensure your dogs are leashed if there are baboons in the area, and please do not let your dogs chase the baboons. The baboons will defend themselves and your pet could be seriously injured,” read the advisory.
NCC Environmental Services are no longer monitoring baboons from within Table Mountain National Park, which has made it difficult to keep the animals from exiting the area, explained Parkscape.
“We have appealed to SANParks for assistance in keeping the baboons out of the recreationally busy Lower Tokai area, and await their response,” the advisory concluded.
