The second wave is officially over and South Africa’s active COVID-19 cases continue to decline.

To date, the country has recorded a total of 1 502 367 confirmed infections. On Saturday, February 20 South Africa recorded 1690 new cases, a far cry from the 12 000 new daily cases that were recorded at the height of the second wave.

Our recoveries now stand at 1 409 553, representing a recovery rate of 93.8%. There are now 43 874 active cases in the country. 

A further 81 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported within the last 24 hours:

  • Eastern Cape 3,
  • Free State 5,
  • Gauteng 29,
  • KwaZulu-Natal 23,
  • Limpopo 0,
  • Mpumalanga 6,
  • North West 0,
  • Northern Cape 0 and
  • Western Cape 15, bringing the total to 48 940 deaths.

The country’s vaccine roll-out began this week and so far, 10 414 healthcare workers have been vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize and healthcare workers were the first to receive their COVID-19 vaccine jabs on Wednesday, February 17. The first jabs were administered at the Khayelitsha District Hospital in the Western Cape.
