An ice-cold beer – is there anything more South African? We know that you don’t need to be convinced to get your favourite cold brew, but it’s always lekker to know when you are doing so for a bargain.
Turns out the price of beer in South Africa is much cheaper than in other countries around the world. In fact, the cost of beer differs quite significantly depending on where in the world it is bought.
According to Expensivity, beers in other countries are way more expensive than in South Africa (after you’ve done all the difficult exchange things).
Expensivity looked at 330ml and compared bottles of beer in liquor stores across the world. Well-known beer brands including Corona and Heineken were the main focus of the research.
In South Africa, beer costs about R25 per 330ml bottle, while Qatar has the most expensive brew, going for an eye-watering R168 with a 100% tax on alcohol imports.
China is pretty expensive too, with the average price of beer at a hotel being R203 and supermarket prices at R27.
The study also indicated that we South Africans make the most of our cheap beer, ranking ninth on the list of top beer-drinkers around the world.
