Criminals have targeted at least seven libraries in recent weeks, the City of Cape Town said on Monday, Marc 29 adding that initial estimates pointed to losses of more than R100 000.

“A number of break-ins, acts of vandalism and targeting of staff in recent weeks have left libraries counting the cost, especially in terms of the services available to communities,” the City said in a statement.

The affected libraries included Delft South library, Lwandle library, Macassar library, Retreat library, Suider Strand library, Weltevreden library and Wyberg library.

The City said it was offering a R5 000 reward “for information that leads to the successful arrests or conviction of perpetrators”.
