If we had a soundtrack playing throughout our lives, what would it sound like? Would an orchestra string out hauntingly methodical tunes during times of melancholy or would a three-piece garage band belt out frenetic sounds when facing moments of excitement or jubilation?

dani and the lion

For Dani, it’s a drunkard, keyboard-playing lion named Leo. Leo is the woebegone sort with a bit of a drinking problem, and during his rare moments of sobriety he’ll comment on the momentous occasions in Dani’s life with an ‘oooh-wah’ or ‘do-whup’.

Dani is played by Fleur de Cap winner Daneel van Der Walt, a charming woman who has rather quirky views on life, and is accompanied on stage by her lion side- kick, Roelof Coelen.

Together the duo goes on a cabaret styled journey into Dani’s quizzical mind, tackling a range of life experiences from being bullied to having one’s heart mercilessly broken.

With a combination of ’80s music covers and original material by van Der Walt, expect a range of musical mash-ups from emotional ballads to ludicrous rag-time band duets.

While many may find the plot and music just a little over the top, this musical production is a reflection on the tumultuous throws of  life – it’s a messy, complex and an unpredictable affair.
