The Western Cape government says it has set aside R60.4 million to effectively tackle Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the province.
According to IOL, this figure is R59.9 million up from the R557 841 budgeted in the 2018/19 financial year and R14.2 million more than the 2019/20 financial year.
Gender-based violence has been on a high rise in the Western cape over the past year, with several incidents making the headlines.
“The departments of social development and community safety both have programmes in place to prevent and fight against GBV and femicide in the province,” the report quoted Western Cape Premier Alan Win de as saying.
Winde confirmed during his State Of The Province address in February that GBV social worker post had been filled in hotspot areas.
“I can confirm too that the strengthening of our GBV after-hours response has been finalised, and all 30 additional GBV social worker posts have been filled to help us in hotspot areas, Times Live quoted the premier as saying at the time.
He said the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown had highlighted the plight of women who fell victim to GBV.
