An alleged killer from Bonteheuwel got re-arrested on Saturday, April 17. 36-year-old Fernando Isaacs was accused of murdering 31-year-old Lauren Dryden, by shooting her after robbing her of her cell phone.
As reported by, IOL the incident occurred in November 2020, while Dryden was waiting for an e-hailing taxi service after her night shift. However, the case was provisionally withdrawn against Isaacs’s in March 2021, and the docket was returned to the investigating officer for further investigation.
The Daily Voice reported at the time that the mother of two’s fiancĂ©, Ashley Ruiters, said he was disappointed by the outcome of the case.
“I’m very disappointed. How could they set a murderer free,” Ruiters said.
Meanwhile, Bonteheuwel ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, has welcomed the alleged perpetrators’ arrest. McKenzie explained to Cape Town Etc that the opportunity now exists for the Criminal Justice System to ensure that the same mistakes don’t happen again.
“It is very clear to us that the failure of the Criminal Justice System is one of the biggest causes of ongoing crime in our communities,” McKenzie said.
McKenzie indicated that the Criminal Justice System must now show that it is serious about partnering with communities to bring an end to this painful period. “We will once again be demanding that the courts do not grant him bail when he appears early next week,” he added.
