Sunday, April 19, saw an introduction to fire season that no one could have predicted. Table Mountain is ablaze. She has been engulfed with smoke and fire and ash, and the repercussions have been nothing short of devastating.
The Mother City has lost homes, heritage, and heaps of wild landscape. Not lost, however, is hope, heart, and community.
It’s times like these that Cape Town never fails to show her true colours. Our firefighters continue to work tirelessly, animal shelters and organisations are on the ball, and the people of this city have delivered on every single level.
The coming together of Capetonians has left me overwhelmed with pride and emotion. From donations of essential goods to fire stations to housing displaced students to caring for our wildlife, no box has been left unticked during this time of tragedy.
Though the inferno continues to rage, we as a city shall match the heat every step of the way.
We salute our firefighters.
We salute our community.
Cape Town will not crumble. We will come together stronger than ever.
