The Western Cape has added 27 more deaths to its dashboard, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the province to 11 576.
This was said by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde on Wednesday, as he gave an update on the coronavirus and vaccine status in the province.
“There was also an unusually high number of deaths in yesterday’s (Tuesday) report. Please note that in the past few days we have received information from the SA Medical Research Council on additional confirmed COVID-19 deaths that occurred in the last four weeks, and these were added in two batches, as they came through, to yesterday (Tuesday) and today’s (Wednesday) death counts.

“These deaths are mostly historic and did not occur in the last few days (most occurred prior to 30 March). There has not been a spike in deaths over the past few days,” Winde said.
He said as of 1pm on April 21, the Western Cape had 2 034 active COVID-19 infections, with a total of 282 768 people having been infected. There were 269 064 recoveries.
“A total of 53 507 out of the 53 820 vaccines received to date as part of the Sisonke trial, had been administered by 5pm on 20 April, which remains on hold at this time,” said Winde.
