Who hasn’t watched an adorable video of newly hatched sea turtles struggling to crawl their way across a white sandy beach and make it to the ocean? Unfortunately, the chances of these baby sea turtles making it to adulthood are incredibly slim, with an estimated one in 1000 surviving.

With their numbers dwindling, it’s become important, now more than ever, to do our part in rescuing these sea creatures. Thankfully, Two Oceans Aquarium have taken the first steps by launching the Turtle Rescue Programme. This incredible initiative aims to give stranded and distressed loggerhead sea turtles a fighting chance by rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing them back into the ocean.

The hatchlings spend around nine months at the facility, growing and becoming strong in order to have a better chance of survival. However, this is a pricey endeavour, with one hatchling costing around R8000.

Thankfully, their “Adopt-a-Hatchling” programme allows members of the public to donate money towards saving these endangered creatures. A contribution of R2500 or R5000 is all you need to help a little sea turtle on its rehabilitation journey. Here are the options when sponsoring a hatchling:

  • A full donation of R5000 gives you the sole naming rights to your chosen sea turtle. Along with this, you’ll also receive a certificate with more details about your new sea turtle.
  • Another option is a partial donation of R2500. This will allow you to give your turtle a new name (if you’re the first partial donator) or a cool surname (if you’re the second donator). You’ll also receive a certificate with all the details of your adorable new hatchling.

If you’d love to donate to this incredible cause this Earth Day, follow the link straight to their donation page.
