“Slap”, crispy, thin-cut or skinny. We all enjoy our fried potatoes in a different way. The number of ways hot chips can be enjoyed are as bountiful as the names they carry in South Africa. Slap chips, tjips, crisps, fries – the list goes on. Whatever you call them, nothing beats a hot, fresh plate of golden spuds.
This Fry-Day, we’re looking at some local eateries that will satisfy every chip-lovers cravings. Here are a few places around town serving up some fabulous fries.
1. Clarke’s Bar & Dining Room, City Bowl
Clarke’s cheese fries are anything but ordinary. Think perfect tjips smothered in sharp cheddar that’s perfectly melted with a touch of smokey char. Decorated with pico de gallo and served with a tomato ragout for the ideal chip and dip experience.

Fine dining fries at their finest. These chickpea, goats cheese and parmesan fries are served steaming with a truffle aioli and smoked “ketchup” (AKA fancy tomato sauce).

3. The Hoghouse Café, Ndabeni
If you’re in the mood to go big, these fries are simply sensational. Thick cut, twice-fried and served alongside a luxurious truffle aioli. These babies are crisped to perfection, combining the best of nostalgic roast potato and classic hot chip.

4. Tigers Milk, Stellenbosch
Tigers Milk are turning up the sweet potato fry game. These golden sticks of joy are fried to perfection. Crisp on the outside, succulent goodness on the inside. Served alongside an aioli of your choice (plain, roasted garlic, truffle, wasabi, “baconnaise”, chipotle or gochjang).

5. Franky’s Diner, Seapoint
There’s a different kind of magic that comes with spiralling potatoes and then hitting them hard in the deep-fryer. Imagine all the best crispy bits smooshed into a golden nest of woven spuds. Pick and pull at this gorgeous mess at Franky’s. Keen for a little something extra? Hit up their cheese sauce and bacon bits topping offer.

This eatery moves with a “fast food made well” kind of attitude. This is the spot for all the classic fry lovers. No gimmicks. Just old-school goodness delivered fresh and hot. Their retro diner ambience will set you up for a deliciously timeless experience.
