A case of murder has been opened for investigation after a 36-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting in Mitchell’s Plain on Friday.
According to EWN, five men in a black VW Golf pulled up in the Eastridge area and one of them exited the car before opening the fire on the victim.
“The victim tried to run away but the suspect followed him and continued to shoot at him multiple times. The victim, aged 36, was transported to a medical facility where he died due to his injuries…,” police said.
The possibility of it being a gang-related attack was not being ruled out, the report said.
This came as shootings in different parts of Mitchell’s Plain continued unabated.
Gangsterism and crime
IOL reported earlier this month that a 33-year-old man was taken to a medical facility for treatment after he was shot in the stomach.
Lentegeur Community Policing Forum chairperson Byron de Villiers said at the time that the area had been experiencing daily shootings.
“The police are understaffed and there are not enough vehicles. It concerns us that people are losing their lives, whether it be gangsters or community members. Something needs to be done.
“We have been saying that nothing is being done by the provincial SAPS to combat the gangsterism and the crime that comes with it. They have been seeing the impact gangsterism has, but nothing has been put on the table. How many more people must die before they realise that we have a problem with gangsters and drugs in the Cape Flats?,” De Villiers was quoted as saying.
