Bree Street is coming along wonderfully. Its latest addition, in terms of food and drink, is Door 221, a cocktail and tapas bar which occupies the same block as Bacon on Bree and Culture Club Cheese.
Door 221 opened its doors just a few weeks ago and is already proving to be a cosy little go-to spot for great tacos, craft beer and, the kicker for me, their trinchado fries.
I guess you could say that there was a certain amount of expectation that surrounded Door 221 prior to its opening. I mean, when your neighbours are the likes of a bacon nirvana and a cheese haven it’s fair to say that Door 221 had a lot to live up to. And I found that it did.
Tuesdays in Cape Town just got a little more varied with Taco Tuesday at Door 221 – every Tuesday you can pick up a delicious, stacked taco like the one pictured below for the reasonable price of R45. Choose from a pulled pork, cumin and tomato salsa taco, a fresh tuna, guacamole, coriander and lime taco or a grilled mushroom, jalapeno and bean taco served with feta and corn salsa. The trinchado fries are also heavenly and I loved them as a side with the hot dog – grilled bockwurst, home-pickled cucumber and radish with German mustard on a soft butter roll from Woodstock Bakery.
This little dive bar is big on character and the locals are loving it already (just check the reviews on Facebook). But whatever you do, make sure you order a side of those trinchado fries.

Found the food well priced and tasty, but the place a bit dirty and dingy, and one of our party did have mild food poisoning – coincidence? The barman/woman seemed stoned and indifferent, dull selection of drinks, only 1 beer on tap, and clearly targeting 25 yr old hipsters as a another trendy bar with nothing much going for it.
I went last week for the first time with my boyfriend, and we enjoyed the food, especially the taco’s, but found the venue a bit random, cold, poor selection of drinks, and probably not our scene as it did feel a bit smokey, and like a student hang out. Feels like it should have been on Long Street, but I guess ok if you looking for something different to remind you of your student days.
Awesome bar! Good vibes and great food that is packed with flavor and totally unpretentious.
