The past year has been incredibly tough for the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa and the new year seems to carry on that legacy of hardship.
With that being said, the Animal Welfare Society says that what they have been through has only made their commitment even more driven to protect the health and wellbeing of both animals and people.
Preventing animal diseases, treating sick and injured pets, preventing animal cruelty and educating all pet owners is their top priority too.
“Whilst we can always count on our pets as a source of motivation, we are deeply grateful that we can also count on your continued benevolence, wisdom and insight that will help ensure our sustainability and shape our future. Thank you”, says the Animal Welfare Society.
The shelter managed to keep its doors open throughout the national lockdown and not that long ago, many pet owners cued outside the entrance doors of the hospital to the main gate.
Due to the distress of the situation, the shelter faced the need to spend a great amount of money on any treatment and care for sick, injured and unwanted pets and personal equipment for the safety of everyone.
The shelter was forced to cancel any planned fundraising events, close the shop, stop adoptions, suspend all volunteer activities and curtail all outreach trips.
“The new year has brought us some respite and we have seen a heartening return on our social enterprise projects, but we are still a long way off from making up the losses incurred over the past year.”
Below are the animal handling statistics for the first 3 months of 2021 (Note, it is still on the rise):
• Sterilised 526 cats and dogs.
• Vaccinated: 330 cats and 720 dogs.
• Conducted 2 945 consultations.
• Admitted 711 hospital patients. An average of 237 per month.
• Investigated 228 animal cruelty cases.
• Surrendered animals (mostly dogs and puppies) increased by 400%.
“Our Pet Adoption Pop-Up events are being well supported. We also have several Mass Animal Sterilisation Projects in the pipeline as well as a full capital works project schedule designed to enhance the lives of the animals in our care and I look forward to sharing our progress with you next time.”
